SOCAL Soccer League Minimizes Risk On and Off the Field With RealResponse

5 min read

Youth sports are supposed to be about the kids: building friendships, sharpening collaboration skills, learning to lose gracefully. But a growing trend of problematic spectator behavior is shifting the focus away from what matters most.

69% of officials believe sportsmanship is getting worse, and they’re most likely to blame parents, according to research from the National Association of Sports Officials. Coaches who have been the target of verbal harassment or abuse rank parents as the number one source of aggression, per the US Center for SafeSport’s 2025 National Coaches Survey.

SOCAL Soccer League, the nation’s largest youth soccer league, strives to rise above these statistics. Creating a safe, positive environment is paramount to their leadership, even as the broader sports culture becomes more emotionally charged.

“Sidelines are more intense,” says Michelle Chesters, Executive Director of SOCAL Soccer League. “A lot of parents come to their child’s sports event already in a heightened state of aggression. As opposed to coming in with the attitude of, ‘I’m just so happy to be out here watching my kids play the sport they love.’”

About SOCAL Soccer League

SOCAL Soccer League, sanctioned by US Club Soccer, provides premier programs for boys and girls ranging from U7 to U19. The organization represents over 250 member clubs and more than 5,000 teams—more than 500% growth since its founding in 2011.

Scaling gameday safety across hundreds of fields

On any given weekend, SOCAL has teams playing across roughly 700 fields. During the annual SOCAL State Cup, that number concentrates to around 100 fields across four or five venues, with as many as 50,000 attendees. Chesters and her small team need visibility across all game surfaces, even when they can’t physically be everywhere.

“There's an expectation that we should be at every field, watching everything that happens. That's not possible,” says Chesters. “The challenge became, ‘How do people trust us to take care of things that need to be taken care of if we're not there?’”

The old system for reporting incidents was inefficient for everyone involved. A parent might sprint across a venue to flag down a staff member. Someone might send an email mid-game (often leaving out critical context like the field number or team name). Others would reach out after the fact, when the moment had already passed.

“Parents want instant gratification. If something happens to their child, regardless of what it is, they want to know immediately how you’re going to handle it and what the consequences are going to be,” says Chesters. “Prior to using RealResponse, we had tons of gaps in how information was reported, which impacted our ability to act.”

The league needed a better way to scale their gameday support, and make it easier for their large, diverse community to share their concerns in real time.

“Reporting systems are going to be key in all youth sports moving forward. If parents feel like they can report something and get input back, that's going to deescalate a lot of the problems we have. You can't stop the bad from happening, but you can be prepared for it and give people resources where they feel safe.”

Taking a front-foot approach to protecting the youth soccer experience

SOCAL piloted RealResponse during its 2026 State Cup events, supporting 2,800 teams competing across five venues and more than 100 fields over multiple weekends.

The league sent emails ahead of time explaining how and when to use the anonymous, two-way reporting platform, emphasizing that it was a resource for everyone: players, referees, parents, and spectators alike. On game days, signage and QR codes were visible throughout the venues (including on the parent-side of fields) to reinforce the message.

“If your approach to culture and the participant experience is, ‘We’ll react when it happens,’ you're already on the back foot,” explains Chesters. “Things can escalate quickly. If you aren’t proactive in how those things are going to be handled, you're setting yourself up to lose.”

League employees took shifts monitoring the inbox and responding to urgent messages as needed. State Cup attendees quickly took to the platform, submitting a range of reports from minor, facility-related feedback to more severe safety incidents that required immediate attention.

“We had an incident where a parent pulled a knife on a sideline, but it was reported through RealResponse and security addressed it fast,” shares Chesters. “That's not something we could have responded to quickly in a regular environment.”

Building trust by bringing parents into the conversation

Chesters is hopeful that RealResponse will not only help SOCAL address negative incidents  faster and more thoroughly, but create a culture where certain behaviors are prevented altogether.

Now the organization has a resource that allows staff to listen to everyone’s feedback and concerns, guaranteeing that all voices are heard, regardless of where or when they speak up.

“Reporting systems are going to be key in all youth sports moving forward. If parents feel like they can report something and get input back, that's going to deescalate a lot of the problems we have. You can't stop the bad from happening, but you can be prepared for it and give people resources where they feel safe.”
